Background: Educational technology and artificial intelligence (AI) are transforming nursing education by expanding approaches to instruction, assessment, and clinical simulation. These innovations offer opportunities to enhance learning while creating ethical, professional, and pedagogical challenges requiring thoughtful evaluation.

Purpose: This paper examines the ethical implications of integrating AI and educational technology into nursing education and explores strategies for implementation that preserve professional standards, equity, academic integrity, and educational quality.

Discussion: AI integration in nursing education raises concerns related to privacy, accessibility, digital competence, academic integrity, and the student-faculty relationship. Increased reliance on digital platforms requires strong data governance and compliance with regulations such as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) to protect student information. Limited access to technology may also contribute to educational inequities.

Faculty and student development are essential to promote responsible technology use. Generative AI introduces concerns regarding plagiarism, misinformation, and potential effects on critical thinking and clinical reasoning. Nursing programs must establish clear guidelines for ethical AI use while ensuring that technology complements rather than replaces faculty mentorship and human connection.

Ethical Analysis: Ethical technology integration should reflect nursing values of caring, compassion, justice, respect, and accountability. AI can support learning, feedback, and clinical reasoning but should not replace professional judgment or moral responsibility. The American Nurses Association emphasizes that AI should augment nursing practice while maintaining professional accountability (ANA, 2015). AI-generated information should inform, not determine, high-stakes academic decisions, with transparency, human oversight, and opportunities for review.

Implications and Conclusion: Ethical adoption of AI prepares future nurses for digital healthcare environments by strengthening technological literacy, ethical reasoning, and equitable access to learning. Nurse educators play a critical role in modeling responsible technology use. Successful integration requires faculty development, institutional support, and ethical frameworks that balance innovation with accountability while preserving nursing’s commitment to compassionate, evidence-based care.
