With 62% of electricity still generated from fossil fuels as of 2023, AI growth risks increasing Carbon Emissions and Environmental Degradation.
Objective: This paper explores Sustainable Pathways for Nigeria’s AI sector to meet rising Energy demand while reducing Environmental Impact and advancing Climate Resilience.
Key Findings:
- Lagos data centers already consume ~200MW, projected to grow 30% annually.
- Nigeria holds 427,000MW Solar potential.
- Green data centers and Circular Economy Strategies can improve efficiency.
- Policy alignment with NREAP 30% renewables by 2030 is critical.
Conclusion & Recommendations: Sustainable AI growth in Nigeria depends on integrating Renewables and Green technologies. We recommend:
- Collaboration between Tech Firms, Government, and ECOWAS to Co-Develop Sustainability Frameworks;
- Targeted Investment in Renewable Energy and Efficient Infrastructure. This approach can reduce emissions, strengthen energy security, and boost economic resilience.
